Links to Useful RM2K Resources

If anyone is interested in what games I'd first played that got me into RPGs and RPG Maker, it was the Laxius Power series (it's a trilogy, the first part being released all the way back in 2001). Be warned however that it can be cheesy and offensive to modern sensibilities. But if you can overlook all of that, it's an excellent adventure!

NOTE: I've only just realised this isn't clear in the 'game' at all, but once you figure out where your missing friend's gone to, you won't be able to exit the town until you visit the apothecary once.

If you need to run the game in windowed mode, you can press F4 after running the .exe, or (from the official forums) create a shortcut of the .exe -> right-click this shortcut and go to properties -> shortcut tab -> in the target field add NormalPlay ShowTitle Window. Then you can keep using the shortcut to launch the game.
